What to Expect at Your First Prosthodontist Appointment

If you’re a new patient, you may have some questions about what to expect at your first prosthodontist appointment. Keep reading to find out what to expect at your first appointment.

Consultation and Examination

During your first appointment, your prosthodontist will conduct a thorough exam of your teeth, gums, soft tissues, tongue, and head/neck area. They will look for signs of any problems or potential problems with these areas, which is the basis for your treatment plan. Any conditions present will be explained to you so that you can understand any treatment recommendations moving forward. This is your opportunity to ask questions and get the information you need in order to make decisions about your oral health.

Some of the things you can expect during your initial visit include the following:

  • A detailed medical and dental history intake form for you to complete before your visit.
  • A thorough visual examination of your mouth to look for signs of decay, damage, or other issues.
  • Digital X-rays of your full mouth to check for hidden problems in your jaw, teeth, and bone structures. That way, we’re able to diagnose any problems as early as possible. That means you can avoid painful and uncomfortable treatments further down the road.
  • A discussion of which findings require immediate care versus those that can wait.
  • An explanation of the treatments recommended for your dental health issues.
  • Discussion of any fears you may have about dental care.
  • Prevention tips and oral hygiene instructions to help you maintain good oral health between visits.
  • Information about fees and financial options.

At the end of your appointment, you will have a treatment plan that outlines the next steps. This may include scheduling a follow-up cleaning with the prosthodontist or a hygienist, as well as any necessary future appointments for fillings, crowns, root canal therapy, etc. If the prosthodontist needs to take impressions of your teeth as a part of a new dental restoration plan, they will let you know when to schedule this as well. In most instances, patients can schedule their next visit before leaving the office.
